Sussex chef Jean Delport shortlisted for prestigious hospitality award

A Michelin-starred Sussex chef is celebrating another major accolade after being shortlisted for Hotel Restaurant Chef of the Year at the prestigious Hotel Cateys.
Jean Delport, executive chef at Restaurant Interlude at Leonardslee Gardens near Horsham, is one of just four chefs in the running for the award, which recognises outstanding talent in the hotel restaurant industry.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on November 23, with Jean’s nomination adding to an impressive list of achievements since he arrived in West Sussex from his native Cape Town, South Africa.
At Interlude, Jean combines classical French techniques with his South African heritage, using seasonal ingredients from the Leonardslee estate and surrounding area to create an individual style of cooking.
The restaurant earned its Michelin star within its first year and has since also been awarded a Michelin Green Star for its sustainable approach and a Michelin Key for its 10 bedrooms. Interlude was named Hotel Restaurant Team of the Year at last year’s Hotel Cateys.
Jean also represented London and the South East on BBC’s Great British Menu in 2025, reaching the banquet final and winning both the fish and main-course heats.
Reflecting on what drives him, Jean said: “I use ingredients from across the estate and I love it when guests enjoy what we have set out to do.”
The latest nomination is recognition of Jean’s achievements and the team behind Interlude, whose food continues to showcase the best of Sussex produce alongside Jean’s South African roots.
