German Riesling wines are versatile and excellent value for money

Sam Pryor and Paul Morgan of Fourth and Church

Fourth and Church in Hove were named the nationwide on-trade winner of the 31 Days of German Riesling wine campaign last week, writes Nick Mosley.

The 11th edition of this annual event was organised by Wines of Germany – the country’s national wine marketing board – in conjunction with well-respected industry magazine Harpers. Over 130 venues across the UK participated this year, hosting various events, promotions and tastings to showcase premium Riesling wines.

“German Riesling can range from dry, subtle, mineral and elegant to powerful, sweet and aromatic and is considered some of the greatest wines in the world”, said Paul Morgan, co-owner and wine buyer of Fourth and Church.

“We loved taking part in the 31 Days of Riesling. It gave us the opportunity to open some fantastic bottles and see just how versatile and excellent value for money Riesling is. The best part was sharing these amazing wines with their unique sense of place, terroir and flavours with our customers and team”.

A full house at Fourth and Church's monthly Sunday Session lunch

Fourth and Church presented over 65 different examples of German Riesling across the month and ran one of their popular Sunday Session multi-course lunch menus, paired with the wines, highlighting the versatility of the grape varietal, the regionality of German wines and how well they work with different foods.

“Riesling is fantastically food friendly, it comes in all styles, dry, off-dry, sweet and sparkling. It has an amazing ability to age and develop in the barrel or bottle, especially when there is a bit of sweetness, what is not to like”, said Sam Pryor, head chef and co-owner.

“Our July Sunday Session gave us the opportunity to devise a multi course menu around the wines, some classic ingredients with our own Fourth and Church twist of textures and flavours, as opposed to traditional pairings.”

Over the 31 days of the promotion, the Fourth and Church team saw a huge increase in sales of all styles of Riesling within the restaurant and through their retail outlet.

Fourth and Church is open Wednesday to Saturday, offering a wide range of wines by the glass and bottle alongside creative small plate dining. Their well stocked shop features carefully selected and exciting wines from small producers, pre-batched cocktails and specialist spirits to purchase to drink at home.
