The season finale of this year’s Flat Racing at Brighton Racecourse will be held on Thursday 15 October, writes Nick Mosley.

Whether you’re a dedicated racegoer or looking to experience the sport for the first time, this final fixture offers the perfect mix of competitive action and the chance to enjoy the fun of  a day at the races.

The season finale is where champions are crowned and final standings are decided. Expect top-class horses, skilled jockeys and expert trainers all pushing for victory in what will be a fiercely contested card.

Brighton’s famous undulating course, with its downhill bursts and challenging finish, provides the perfect stage for dramatic racing and close finishes. It’s an afternoon where every race counts and every moment matters.

It’s not just horses racing though; this year, BITE Sussex – the local food and drink group for Sussex – will be opening the day with a Waiters Race. Bartenders and waiters working in restaurants in and around Brighton and Hove will be going head-to-head to discover who’s not only fastest but who has the steadiest hand as they race over 200 metres balancing a tray of food and drink.

“It’s been a few years since we last hosted our annual Waiters Race,” said Nathalie Gomez de Vera of BITE Sussex.

“As always it will be a fun start to the race day and a great way to support our charity partner”.

Racegoers will be able to bet on their favourite waiter or restaurant, with proceeds going to the Justlife charity that supports families and individuals who are living in temporary accommodation with welfare, health and housing needs.

“When we think about homelessness, we often picture someone sleeping on the streets,” said Fran Anderson from Justlife.

“But here in Brighton and Hove, many families with children are homeless too, living in temporary accommodation because they have nowhere else to go. That can mean a whole family living in a single room, without the space, stability or everyday essentials most of us take for granted.”

“Children may have nowhere to play or do their homework, while parents face the enormous stress of trying to keep family life going in very difficult circumstances.”

“Justlife’s Children and Families Project provides practical, compassionate support to families during this incredibly challenging time. Our team helps with everything from accessing essential furniture and household items to navigating services, attending appointments and connecting families with health, education, financial and community support. Most importantly, we make sure families don’t have to navigate homelessness alone”.

Sam Goatcher has recently been promoted to the general manager role at Brighton Racecourse.

“Brighton Racecourse is proud to be part of such a vibrant city, and our Season Finale is a wonderful way to round off the racing calendar,” said Sam.

“Whether you're a regular racegoer or joining us for the first time, we look forward to welcoming everyone for a memorable day by the coast”.
