You don’t need to splash the cash to enjoy great food and drink in Brighton and Hove, writes Nick Mosley.
There are offers galore at some of the best restaurants and bars in the city – you simply need to do a bit of research and take advantage of mid-week and early doors offers. Here are some of my top picks for September.

Clementine & Co
Clementine & Co is one of my all-time favourite bars – and not just in Brighton. As a seasoned global food and drink explorer, I can hand-on-heart say that owner Matt and his team of very talented bartenders not only rustle up superb cocktails but also great value ones too.
Located in bustling Duke Street, Clementine & Co serves up amazing extended happy hours deals with a huge choice of handcrafted drinks at £8.95 on week days and Sunday, and also an ever-changing £5 cocktail of the week deal. Enjoy with their small plates and sharing platers that are packed with Sussex produce from the likes of Curing Rebels and Smorls to pair with your quality sipping.

The Coal Shed
Having recently relocated from Boyce’s Street to North Street, The Coal Shed has gone from strength to strength. For steaks and beef cuts, you’re not going to find anywhere finer in the city.
The new restaurant space – that also includes a cocktail bar – is absolutely spectacular; with the food, cooking and service completely on point.
Their mid-week set menu is a treat and impressive value at two courses for £19 or three courses for £23 and available Monday to Friday from 12 noon until 6.30pm.
Starters include ash grilled carrots, house Caesar salad and burnt end tacos; mains are grilled courgettes, sea bream – with wonderful Nutbourne tomatoes – and onglet steak which is a personal favourite cut of mine. With chocolate tart and a selection of ice creams and sorbets, its a veritable feast.

Hotel du Vin bistro
Hotel du Vin is a long-established staple for quality dining in the city. Their generous Sunday lunch is a joy to behold but you can also take advantage of their set menu deal at a very pocket-friendly £24.95 for two courses.
Available Monday to Saturday lunchtimes, and every day 5-7pm for early diners, you can add a glass of house wine or bottled beer for just £3.50.
I enjoyed this menu earlier in the summer and its fair to say that the portions are generous and have Sussex produce at their heart. Choose from starters including Brighton Gin marinated pâte, mains including Sussex fish pie and a whopping honey glazed pork chip with Sussex camembert mash, and desserts including a chocolate fondant with a custard of Henners sparkling wine.

The Archives
A relatively new addition to Brighton’s café-bar scene, The Archives is the perfect place to sit back and chill-ax with a coffee – or cocktail – whilst reading the day’s news or leisurely flipping through a book.
What I particularly like about Laurie and the team’s offer is that they’re serving up regular cocktails alongside 0% drinks and lower alcohol options so you can make a conscious choice about what’s in your glass whilst also enjoying a premium built drink.
Happy hour runs every day from Monday through to Thursday. Its £16 for two regular cocktails, £14 for two low alcohol cocktails or £12 for two 0% cocktails plus deals on house wines and beers.

Terre à Terre
Regular readers of The Argus Taste section will know I’m a massive fan of Terre à Terre. I genuinely think its consistently been the very best restaurant in Brighton and Hove for decades; creative, impeccable service, affordable and mind-bogglingly delicious. If there’s one restaurant that has put Brighton on the global food map, its undoubtably Terre à Terre.
Check out their Terre à Verre menu that’s available Wednesday to Friday lunchtime and all day Sunday. It’s a glorious, well-priced tasting tour of Terre à Terre’s culinary wizardry for £33.95 per person including a carafe of organic wine to share.
Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan or a meat-eater, I defy anyone not to leave this iconic Brighton restaurant thoroughly sated and impressed.
