A series of spring producer events celebrating Sussex farmers and food producers will return to locations across the county throughout April and May, writes Nick Mosley.

Organised by mobile farm shop The Sussex Peasant, the markets bring together local farmers, growers and artisan food producers, giving visitors the opportunity to buy seasonal food directly from the people who produce it.

Founded by Sussex farmer Ed Johnstone, The Sussex Peasant champions shorter food supply chains by connecting communities with local agriculture through regular markets and deliveries across Sussex.

“These markets are about bringing people closer to the farmers and producers behind their food”, said Ed.

“Sussex has an extraordinary network of growers and makers and we want to make it easier for people to support them”.

The upcoming spring events will showcase a wide range of produce from across the county, including farm-fresh vegetables, pasture-raised meats, artisan breads, cheeses, preserves and other locally produced goods.

Producers that can be found at the events include Flint Owl Bakery, known for its naturally fermented breads, Macaroons by Dark, Golden Nectar olive oils, and Sussex Seedlings who specialises in nutrient-rich locally grown super salads.

Visitors will have the chance to meet the producers behind the food, learn more about growing and production, and stock up on seasonal ingredients while supporting independent Sussex businesses.

The Sussex Peasant’s Spring Market series will take place at several locations across Sussex including Hove Town Hall (Thursday 23 April), Danehill Social Club (Friday 24 April), Preston Park (Saturday 25 April), The Bull in Ditchling (Thursday 30 April) and the Pepper Pot in Queens Park (Saturday 2 May).
