With temperatures rising I dare say tucking into a hearty Sunday roast isnt exactly on everyones agenda at the moment, writes Nick Mosley.

Thankfully there are lots of other lighter – perhaps more creative – but equally delicious options to be had across the city. One that particularly caught my eye was the Easy Tiger Sunday BBQ at The Hampton in Upper North Street.

The Easy Tiger kitchen is headed by talented chef Sabu Joseph who’s had a long history in the city banging the pots and pans in numerous Indian restaurants. Originally from Kerala in the south of India, Sabu’s also worked in London before heading to the coast and now serves up his take on Indian street food seven days a week in an informal pub environment.

It must have been close to a year since I last visited The Hampton and I must say they’ve tarted it up somewhat. I think it had become a bit tired through use, but the much-needed refresh includes jolly wall murals and freshly sanded tables that have completely lifted the venue. It’s still got a local boozer vibe its just considerably nicer.

The drinks line-up has always been impressive with a really good range of beers on tap – including gluten free – and an extensive selection of natural wines that are discounted by 20% on Sunday. We ordered the Sicilian white, which we’d had before and is a lovely rounded fruity wine that holds its own with the spicy dishes.

The Sunday menu features five dishes that are cooked on the bbq in the sun-drenched pub yard. Priced in the region of £12-14, each dish comes with a hearty portion of spiced fries so they’re really good value. There’s also a few dishes from Easy Tiger’s regular menu for those who prefer a biryani, more sauce-based curry or the always irresistible tongue-tingling Kerala fried chicken.

For me, it had to be the lamb chops. I am currently utterly obsessed with bbq lamb; I’ve had it at least once a week over the summer. Sabu’s version was marinaded in yoghurt and lime with punchy coriander and traditional spices; the juicy flesh literally fell off the bone.

The bbq spicy peppers were a real treat, stuffed with spicy lentils, corn and cubes of tofu. Hearty, healthy and colourful, they’re about as far as you can get from a traditional Sunday roast.

My only slight criticism is that I think the pub’s online booking needs a bit of focus from management. We struggled to book a table for four online, which was surprising as we were pretty much the first diners to arrive at 1pm and there were still plenty of ‘reserved’ tables that remained empty when we left at 3pm. A wasted opportunity when tables could have been turned.

There really is nothing not to love about Sabu’s superb cooking. There’s no scrimping on ingredient quality nor portion size, and it certainly won’t break the bank so perfect for a mid-week supper if you don’t fancy cooking. The Sunday BBQ will be running into September so there’s still lots of opportunities to enjoy. With Indian food of this quality, its easy to see why Easy Tiger is a roaring success.
